Know your Elefants: 900ie

In 1990 Cagiva celebrated their first Paris Dakar win with a limited production of 999 fuel injected Cagiva Elefant 900´s. Each motorcycle came with a metal keychain which was numbered and signed by the four time Dakar champion Edi Orioli. You have one of these bikes if your frame serial number starts with a 1B✩ - Lucky you !

The fuel injected system used was the IAW Weber Marelli first introduced in the Ducati 851 and also found in the Moto Guzzi Quota 1000.

The front suspension is manufactured by Marzocchi and it is a set of 41.7 mm front forks with 250mm of travel while the Swedish manufacturer Ohlins provided the rear with a hydraulically adjustable shock with 230 mm of travel.

The engine is a Desmodue 904cc engine similar to the Ducati 900ss with an air cooled-oil radiator on either side and a 5 gear transmission.

The hydraulic clutch slave cylinder is located on the right side of the engine as opposed to the 904cc engines that the 900AC later models were equipped with.

The brakes are courtesy of the Japanese manufacturer Nissin with only one disc rotor in the front and one in the back. Front wheel is a size 19 while the rear is a 17.
